As part of the WINZER project (heatstorage in minesin the Ruhrarea), large-volume seasonal heat storage facilities in mining infrastructures and the surrounding groundwater bodies are being investigated. The aim is to develop previously unused thermal storage capacities and to optimize existing facilities.

To this end, the Chair of Geothermal Energy Systems is developing thermo-hydraulic models to increase the operational safety and cost-effectiveness of mine heat storage systems and simulating the cyclical thermal load on the subsurface. This enables statements to be made about the efficiency of heat storage as well as identifying possible risks and thus evaluating future locations.
